What is it?
This is the estate version of the new, third-generation Focus. When it was first shown at the Geneva show in 2010, there were a number of US blogs complaining that America was only getting the hatchback version of the new Focus and this was much better looking. We certainly agree about the looks. The estate is possibly the sleekest small family estate yet launched (not the ultimate accolade, we would have to admit), and better looking than the hatchback, whose giant rear lights look a bit like they are making a bid for freedom.
Not that the new estate has sacrificed practicality for looks. Maximum boot space is class-competitive at 1,502 litres (Golf is 1,495 litres, but the new Astra is an impressive 1,550 litres), and the Focus has Ford's excellent new luggage cover, which requires only a light touch of a button for it to retract automatically.
