What is it?

After a brief absence Volvo has returned its economy-focused DRIVe badge to the V70 estate range. The previous diesel engine fell foul of the Euro4 emissions rules, but the latest 115bhp 1.6-litre unit is already shared with the smaller V60, and emits just 119g/km CO2.

The engine is mated to a six-speed manual and like all the larger engined D3 models, the DRIVe gets automatic start/stop as standard. As well as the tax friendly emission levels, Volvo claims the car should be capable of 62mpg.

Predictably the downsized engine is at the base of the range in the performance stakes - it takes 11 seconds to get to 62mph and will run out of puff before 120mph - but it's available with every trim level, and is intended to appeal to estate customers who need a little more space than is offered by the decidedly svelte V60.
