British firm Zytek has created the world's first hybrid diesel, based on the three-cylinder Smart ForFour unit.

It's claimed that this hyrbrid version of the ForFour would emit less CO2 than a Prius and attain 88mpg. The actual carbon dioxide figure is 85g/km - well within the governments Ultra Low Carbon Challenge target of 100g/km.

The new system works by simplifying normal hybrid mechanicals and adding complex electronics. The car uses electric power to move away, before the diesel engine takes over. Zytek are hoping a major manufacturer will utilise their technology, which could mean a new lease of life for the old ForFour.
